Why I love Radishes
I didn’t always love radishes, in fact I can remember early on not liking them and picking them off my salad ~ What I silly girl I was! So it’s only recently that my love affair began and it started with the watermelon radish. I saw it in the vegetable stand at the market and thought it looked so pretty and i secretly longed to try something that looked so cool and gourmet. I decided to buy it and give it a try. I came home and later that night sliced it open, the color was a beautiful hot pink and I added it into my salad. The taste was mild and sweet with just a slight peppery taste and It was crunchy, and moist. I LOVED IT!
Radishes are actually a root vegetable that originated in China and today, it is widely cultivated throughout the world. What deepens my love of radishes besides the flavor and color is the fact that they are packed with many great nutrients and are very low in calories. Roughly 16 calories, radishes, are a great source of vitamin C.It's probably no surprise that radishes contain fiber, aka indigestible carbohydrates. This keeps our digestive system flushed and functioning with regularity and also aids in maintaining a healthy weight.Radishes can also regulate blood pressure, relieve congestion, and prevent respiratory problems such as asthma or bronchitis. They have antibacterial, anti-fungal, and detoxifying properties, and contain compounds that soothe rashes, dryness, and other skin disorders.
Generally, radishes are available year round with peak seasons in winter and spring. My latest radish fetish is with the Daikon radish or Japanese radish. They are bigger than the watermelon radish and are long white with a green top. You can find them at any international market. Of course you can always go with the widely known little red radish that are available everywhere. Radishes can be eaten raw, sliced into a salad, cut into chips to use with a dip instead of potato chips or, grilled, roasted or pickled. Be brave, explore all the different varieties and you too may have a new love affair.
